sweet stuff

I can't believe my blog so far doesn't have a post about food! I mean.. somebody give me an award or something! :)

I was just thinking of all the memories associated with specific candies. I've listed some of the sweet treats that are an integral, inseparable part of my childhood.

10 paisa chocolate
This was a coconut + some beige chewy thing that wasn't caramel confection. It was wrapped in a transparent paper with white lettering. People would come home and surprise us kids with this. yumm..

KaLLekai peppermint
Candied peanuts. White and red. Always fought for the red ones. Usually ran from the shop to the park and settled there on the bench for a good hour relishing some 15 odd candies.

Sweet cigarette
They were all white and chalky to taste. Had a red colored tip (to imitate a lit ciggie). We were an ultra cool gang with a ciggie in each tiny mouth. And ofcourse there was the added bonus of licking the red end and applying the color on our lips.
A ciggie + a candy + a lipstick... how can any kid not like that!

Joker
A small cardboard box with a joker's smiling face on one side and when you pull a piece of the box the joker's face would open and tiny red candy balls roll out! Awesome! The joker face was a li'l scary (I used to be scared of all jokers and clowns more of that here... but it had candies inside.. so I guess I got over it) :) I didn't like the color of my hands after eating them though. A weird red/pink. blechh.. :(p

Kuttundi
Tamarind balls.. *droooooool* The best part of any summer was stealing into the kitchen, opening the box of tamarind, getting salt, sugar, spice and mixing them in the right proportion and dividing it carefully among the drooling lot. We'd wait for the mixing and dividing expert with small sticks in our hands. The balls go on the sticks and woo... it's pure bliss for the next hour.

So.. what did you grow up on my dearies?

Almost choked and died on a Poppins, when i was somewhere between 2-4, hate peppermint sticks, i was disappointed by them, they look a lot tastier than they are. Liked the Gas mutais (peppermint pills?). Loved all the weird, nameless (don't remember them) Chinese, Japaneses and Korean candies (grew up partly in Singapore and HK) (there was a sour apple candy I really liked)Melody was always a treat, jera mutai was a staple and there were several others that i vaguely remember but cant describe.

I am glad you are back, honestly it was becoming very hard to pretend to be working.

then muttai (honey candy), big fun bubblegum, chic chic chic chiclets, gems in the cylindrcal cardboard box, street cotton candy, paaal ice (i doubt if anyone knows this), frozen ice candy (this was called pepsi then, before pepsi came to india that is :) ) and kulfi that comes after 10pm on the chennai streets
(kulfi in metal cups help together by cut cycle tube sections)

hmm my favs were like muck-roons(something available in deep down south) even now my grandma makes it a point to stock this up in our house when ever i visit my native :)and i think the pepsi i used to know it as sip-ups...and the exhibition or circus which used to happen once a year or so...its a feast for candy lovers like us :) especially the panju mutai...mom would go crazy on how these things are very bad for health and all...but me and dad wudnt listen to her...haha funny days and my all time fav..eclairs..sweet chewy yummy...i got introduced to the after 10 kulfi in chennai..wow wat a treat it was..we used to reduce the tv volume so that we dont miss the ringing of the cycle :D....all these chocolates reminded me of a old joke we used share in our gang..ask kid sometime..i think this caused a chain mail in our groups..something like a 50 or so mails in one day :D

    drool drool

I had to comment on this one.

The oldest memories I have is the orange colored ones @Naresh mentioned. I still look around for that one!

Then it was 'kadalai mittai'. the peanut + jaggery made into cakes one. Yummmmm

And all those mentioned by @theanalogkid. (including the paaal ice, that is); except chiclets. By the time it started showing up in stores in my place, think they pulled it off. Do they still sell those?

Also this small pickled 'elantha pazham'. not a candy, its more like a paste or something. I used to turn the plastic sheet inside out and lick it clean. LoL

Then, the latest addition, was Hajmola (not the candies, the pills kind). Oh, and its not sweet, of course..
Am still crazily addicted to this one. Searched around a few places and found it here in Singapore too now. Tasting one right now, as I type this :P

read ur comments on my blog, : ) yes we do have a freakish habit of thinking alike. Didn't know where to post a reply so leaving it here, hope thats alright. and yes we do have sort of similar approaches to our faith in humanity.

Once again request you to write, I need fodder for thought. Life has me pinned to walls and as I see no easy exit, i must resign myself to distraction while it runs its course.
